Leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc held a crucial strategy meeting in Parliament on Tuesday to coordinate their approach for the ongoing Monsoon Session, with a unified demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence in the House to address key national issues.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said the alliance would press for answers on matters of “pressing public interest,” including the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Operation Sindoor, US President Donald Trump’s claims about India-Pakistan peace talks, and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar.
Taking to social media platform X, Venugopal said, “In the meeting of INDIA bloc leaders, in the presence of Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, it was decided to insist on the PM answering questions on issues such as the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, Donald Trump’s ceasefire statements, Bihar SIR Process, Delimitation, growing atrocities against Dalits, Adivasis, Backward Classes and women, the AI 171 plane crash, and the Manipur civil unrest. These are critical issues affecting the nation and must be given top priority.”
Despite this unified stance, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till noon soon after the day’s proceedings began, amid continued opposition protests.
Opposition MPs had earlier submitted several adjournment motion notices in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, demanding debates on the Bihar SIR process — an electoral roll revision drive initiated by the Election Commission ahead of state elections. Critics allege that the revision criteria exclude Aadhaar and PAN cards, which are essential for accessing welfare schemes, thereby threatening voting rights, especially for marginalised communities.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, calling for a re-evaluation of the EC’s verification document list. Congress MP Manickam Tagore also sought an adjournment motion to debate the democratic implications of the SIR process.
In the Rajya Sabha, AAP MP Sanjay Singh called for a discussion on the constitutional and electoral consequences of the revision. Congress MPs Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Ranjeet Ranjan, and Neeraj Dangi also submitted notices urging debate on the EC’s actions, including its proposed expansion of the SIR exercise to other states like West Bengal.
As the Monsoon Session proceeds, opposition parties appear determined to keep the pressure on the government, focusing on electoral transparency, internal security, and accountability at the highest levels.
